Similarities between Neil from Heat and Vincent from Collateral
The first time I saw Collateral, I was struck by how much the character of Vincent reminded me of Neil from Heat. Two solitary figures (Neil has partners in crime but spends most of his time alone) with no attachment, similarly dressed for the same purpose : to be indistinguishable and anonymous so that potential witnesses would have a hard time describing them to the police (as Michael Mann points out in the audio commentaries for both films, using almost the exact same words), two men who are violent but in a very controlled and deliberate manner, they are disciplined, precise and efficient, they are experts at what they do, and they also happen to be in the same city in both films. Two lone wolves in the big, sprawling city of Los Angeles. But while Neil still has a code of honor as well as the ability to enter into genuine relationships, Vincent is very cynical, manipulative and nihilistic. I always thought of Vincent as almost being an alternate version of Neil that had survived the events of Heat and had drifted deeper into alienation…
PS : After writing this, I came across a picture of De Niro’s hair color test for Heat that was probably taken on the set, and in that picture his hair and beard are fully grey, needless to say the resemblance to Vincent is striking : http://i.imgur.com/MC2o8Th.jpg
